PDP Summons Ubah, Four Others For Illegal Primary Election

Nigeria’s ruling party the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has summoned members of the Anambra chapter of the party, Senator Andy Ubah, Chief Chris Ubah, Ejike Oguebego, Chief Benji Udeozor, and Mrs Tonia Nwankwu to appear before the party National Working Committee at its secretariat in Abuja  today, Wednesday, August 28 to defend themselves for illegally conducting a primary election. In statement released by the Acting National Publicity Secretary, Barrister Tony Caesar Okeke, the party distanced itself from any other primary election in a bid to select a flag bearer for the November 16th Anambra governorship election, saying the leadership of the ruling party has concluded its primary election which already produced a flag bearer for the Anambra election.
The party said the primary which was conducted by the Governor Shema of Katsina state is the legitimate primary recognised by the party. “The leadership of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) hereby condemns in the strongest possible terms the organization of a parallel primary election to elect a candidate for the November 16, 2013 governorship election in Anambra state other than the one conducted by the Party on August 24, 2013. “For the avoidance of doubt, the only Governorship Primary election recognized by the Party was the Primary election conducted by the Electoral Panel under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Ibrahim Shehu Shema which was appointed by the Party”. It further dissociated itself from any primary election organised by any other group under the guise of the ruling party, thereby alerting the police boss to investigate any illegal convergence which is a breach of the party’s constitution. It further called on selected members of the Anambra chapter of the party, Senator Andy Ubah, Chief Chris Ubah, Ejike Oguebego, Chief Benji Udeozor, and Mrs Tonia Nwankwu to appear before the party National Working Committee at its secretariat in Abuja today, to defend themselves. “The organization of another Primary election other than the one referred to above is a clear breach of our party’s constitution and is therefore totally unacceptable and cannot be condoned. We call on the Inspector General of Police to forthwith commence investigations into the illegal procurement of sensitive party materials for the illegal governorship primary election by persons who paraded themselves as working for the PDP. “In view of their participation in the breach of our constitution referred to above, the following persons are hereby invited to appear before the National Working Committee for a preliminary hearing at the PDP National Secretariat, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at 10 am prompt to show cause why disciplinary action should not be taken against them”.
