Four killed in assassination attempt on Young Shall grow CEO

A police corporal, a driver and two suspected assassins were yesterday shot dead following an exchange of gunfire between the police and gunmen at Festac Area of Lagos. The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of the Young Shall Grow Motors, Mr. Vincent Obianodo narrowly escaped death as he was shot in the hand during the encounter. The hoodlums were said to have attempted killing the transporter, but were repelled by his police escort.

The suspected assassins were said to have trailed him from his office and almost killed him as he approached his residence at 4th Avenue, Festac Town. It was gathered that the gunmen fired at him, but his driver quickly sped off. The police escort from Patrol and Guard unit were said to have immediately engaged the hoodlums; even as the area ‘E’ commander, Mr. Dan Okoro was alerted and he mobilised his personnel to the scene. Following the shootout, two of the suspects were killed, while a police Corporal, Ngozi Chijioke was also shot dead.
A police officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said it was a typical assassination attempt. He said; “If it was a kidnap attempt, the gunmen would not have fired directly at him. The way they fired at Obianodo showed they wanted him dead.” When contacted, the state Police Public Relation Officer, DSP, Ngozi Braide confirmed the incident, saying the transporter was accosted by some hoodlums on 22 Road, Festac Town.
She said: “The hoodlums opened fire and his driver was killed. Obianodo was shot on his arm and a police corporal was also killed. However, the police shot two of the hoodlums dead while others escaped with bullet wounds.” According to her, the hoodlums’Toyota Highlander Sport Utility Vehicle, SUV, was perforated with bullets; adding that the police recovered one AK 47, one AK 49 rifles and eight loaded magazines with ammunition. She said the motive is still unknown; “We cannot narrow it down to assassination, kidnapping or armed robbery until investigations are concluded”.
However, the Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko has appealed to hospitals and the public to report anyone with bullet wounds to the nearest police station.
