The Lagos State Police Command has started investigation into the murder of a banker, Adindu Ohamara, who was stabbed to death by his suspected homosexual lover in Akoka, Bariga Local Council Development Area  of Lagos State. It was gathered that Ohamara lived in a three-bedroom flat with his elder sister, Flora and one Collins, an undergraduate of the University of Lagos. According to residents, the banker  was stabbed repeatedly at his residence located at 26 Obayan Street. For stealing a N50,000 Sony Ericsson phone belonging to Governor Rauf Aregbesola, a 31-year-old Kelvin Ighodalo has been sentenced to 45-year imprisonment by an Osogbo High Court. Ighodalo stole the phone from the pocket of Aregbesola on November 27, 2010, when the governor was being inaugurated at Government Technical College, Osogbo. Justice Oyejide Falola, who heard the case, found Ighodalo guilty on six counts, which included conspiracy, stealing and fraud. He was sentenced to 10-year imprisonment for the first three counts and five years for each of the last three which included impersonation, obtaining property by falsehood and collusion. Falola, who ruled that Ighodalo deserved the jail term, held that the convict used the phone to obtain N500, 000 from the Owa of Ilesa, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, while he obtained N200, 000 from Mr Shengen Rahman, an associate of the governor. The Federal Government on Sunday refuted claims that the President had a hand in the grounding and outright ban of the official plane of Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi for “operating illegally in the country. ”Reacting to reports that the Presidency was in the know as touching the ban of the Rivers government aircraft last Friday, the government through the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, stated that such stories were mere speculation. The General Manager, Public Affairs, NCAA, Mr. Fan Ndubuoke, told our correspondent that the aircraft was not supposed to be in Nigeria, stressing that the Rivers State Government was aware of this fact. The Jamb examinations took place today in the 36 States of the federation and about 1.8 million applicants wrote the exams. I visited some centers in Lagos today and the one that really caught my attention was an uncompleted building used as a center. This uncompleted building has been in this School since 1995 according to reliable sources who pleaded anonymity and the Lagos State government just abandoned the building . It is now used as a class in the school. The wet floor was caused by the leaking decking of the building and this can lead to the eventual collapse of this building, God forbid. Another one is a windowless dilapidated building also used a center. All these pictures show the lack of commitment of the Lagos State State government towards education. The Senate Committee Chairman on Petroleum, Senator Emmanuel Paulker, tHURSday said the upper chamber would summon the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to appear before it next week to defend an alleged sale of four oil mining leases (OMLs) in the Niger Delta without conducting a bid process.   Paulker’s disclosure of the decision to summon the NNPC was the fallout of a protest by five ethnic groups in Delta State which shut out members and staff of the National Assembly for three hours as the protesters stopped human and vehicular entry into the institution in the early hours of the day.The protesters which came under the aegis of Delta State Oil Producing Communities, alleged that the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke, connived with Shell to re-allocate the oil blocs said to be worth N58.9 trillion as they accused the minister and Shell of truncating the bidding process for the oil mining leases (OMLs) with alleged disregard to “the doct

Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State has described as a “media creation” the purported rift between him and President Goodluck Jonathan. “I am not aware that Mr. President and I are quarrelling. As far as I am concerned, we are not quarrelling”, Amaechi told reporters on Thursday in Kano State. The governor stated this even as he said the planned election into the Nigerian Governors’ Forum was not a do-or-die. Amaechi was in the ancient city on the invitation of his Kano State counterpart, Rabiu Kwankwaso. Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi wept yesterday as he received the remains of his deputy, Mrs. Funmilayo Adunni Olayinka at the Governor’s Office in Ado Ekiti. The late Olayinka passed on in a Lagos hospital on April 6, after a protracted battle with cancer. Her remains were flown from Lagos yesterday after a commendation service at the Anglican Church of Ascension, Opebi, on a chartered flight to Akure Airport at 3.27pm accompanied by the wife of the governor, Mrs. Bisi Fayemi, the deceased’s husband, Mr. Lanre Olayinka and her children, Ololade, Olamide and Yeside. The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Ganiyu Owolabi and the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Ayo Daramola led other government functionaries to receive the corpse at the airport. There was palpable fear at the Ogbaru Plastic Dealers’ Multipurpose Market in the commercial city of Onitsha yesterday when the traders protested against the alleged plot by the state government to merge the market. Daily Sun gathered that the protest erupted when the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Robert Okonkwo allegedly wrote to the market executives on the plan by the ministry to merge the market with Prime Laden Investment and Agency limited. The Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Ogbaru Plastic Dealers’ Multipurpose Market, Mr. Timothy Uba and Sampson Ejezie respectively, while briefing journalists brandished a letter from the commissioner’s office to the market executives directing the Prime Investment Agency to collect tolls and other revenues from the market. Mr. Uba disclosed that individual traders bought land from the agency and built shops only for the latter to come back to the said market to refer to them as subscribers instead of the owners of the shops.

MTN Nigeria, yesterday scooped a medium term financing deal of about N470 billion from 24 banks Including 17 local financial institutions and five foreign banks.The local lenders led by Zenith Bank, which pooled N55 billion (about $367m) FCMB N15 billion, while GTB also pooled N40 billion. Similarly, UBA and Fidelity Bank contributed N25 billion and N26.2 billion receptively. Other banks that participated in the deal include Access with N35 billion, Diamond N5 billion, Citibank N5 billion, Ecobank N15 billion, First Bank N40 billion, FSDH N3 billion, Keystone N5 billion, Mainstreet N5 billion, Rand Merchant N3 billion. Also Stanbic IBTC contributed N15 billion, Standard Chartered N7 billion and Union Bank N20 billion, making up a total of N329.25 billion.
