Ex-Immigration boss cautions parents on children’s oversea trips.

Former Comptroller- General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Mrs. Rose Chinyere Uzoma, has urged parents to stop sending their children, especially the girl-child on “fruitless”  overseas trips. Uzoma claimed that most of the hapless girls end up in jail abroad. Speaking at Nkwerre Country Club in Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State, venue of the Annual August Women meeting, the former Immigration boss, said: “Parents may not be aware of the grave dangers faced by most of their wards who want to travel abroad at all cost in search of greener pasture.”

She noted that the good life the girls dreamt of while living in Nigeria collapsed as they ended up being confronted with extreme hardship abroad. The situation, according to her, forced most of them into prostitution and other heinous crimes. Uzoma said: “The business of international travel has been infested with many fraudsters, who dupe prospective travellers under the guise of being travel agents. These people promise to procure visa and provide job opportunities for our unsuspecting children at outrageous charges.
“Most times, the fraudsters procure fake travel documents resulting in their victims being prevented from travelling at our international Airports. “Their passports are impounded while a number of them are prosecuted sometimes for offences that they did not commit knowingly”. She pointed out that those who were fortunate to arrive at their destinations in Europe, America and Asia were often disappointed that the great dreams they had before embarking on the journey were far from the reality in the foreign countries. Uzoma said: “The bad states of the economy of nearly all countries in the world have brought hardship even to the citizens of the most developed nations, leaving their own children without jobs. “Majority of our sons and daughters who migrate with the intention of staying abroad end up not finding job opportunities and thus become easy prey to criminal elements and today many of them are languishing in jails, while many others are being deported back to the country on daily basis.”
The former Immigration boss, who was one of the women honoured by the Nkwerre women for her sterling contribution to the community, advised parents wishing to send their children abroad to exercise great care as all that glitter are not gold.
