Gunmen abduct pastor, six children

According to the Punch a 27-man gang on Friday abducted a pastor, Mr. Godson Akubiro, and six of his children from their Adeosun Street residence, Koya Estate, Igbo Olomu, Ikorodu, Lagos State. Akubiro is said to be the founder of Mountain of Breakthrough Church in the area. The incident was said to have occurred about 1.30am.

Boko Haram: FG bars airlines from Maiduguri airport

The Federal Government has barred airlines from flying into the Maiduguri airport until March 2014; documents obtained by our correspondent have shown. According to a Notice to Airmen sent by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency to airline operators, a copy of which was obtained by our PUNCH, the carriers were told that the airport would no longer be available for flights until March 2014.

Five arrested over Eagles bomb attack

Ethiopian police have arrested five people suspected of plotting suicide bombings during Ethiopia’s World Cup qualifying match against the Super Eagles in October, security officials said on Thursday. The planned attack failed when two Somali suicide bombers accidentally blew themselves up a few kilometers from Addis Ababa Stadium where football fans were gathering.

ASUU Suspends Strike After 5 Months

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its over five months old strike. ASUU Chairman, University of Lagos Chapter, Dr. Karo Ogbinaka told Channels Television that the union decided to suspend the strike after a marathon meeting held in Minna, Niger State capital on Monday. In attendance at the meeting, which ran till late in the evening, were all the ASUU branch chairmen and secretaries, the national executive members of the body, coordinators and past leaders, including 56 members from 52 universities.

Delta: Kidnapped victims return home with chopped off fingers

The 80-year-old retired Army Major, Azum Asoya, and his 55-year-old wife, Elizabeth, have been set free by their abductors. The gang however left an indelible mark on their body by cutting off their fingers. They were set free on Sunday, after 17 harrowing days in the den of the kidnappers. The octogenarian and his wife were abducted by the gang on November 30, while on their way home from a burial in another part of the town.

As the Presidency prepares a reply to the 18-page letter written by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to President Goodluck Jonathan on the state of the nation, indications emerged, yesterday, that the former leader was not expecting any reply but action from Jonathan. A competent source according to Sunday Vanguard said  that Obasanjo was more interested in Jonathan addressing the core issues he raised in his letter rather than getting a reply to his damning missive, entitled, ‘Before it is too late’.

The casualties, seated in the neatly parked steaming car, with registration number FGG 931 AE, along the road, after negotiating the roundabout, left the air-conditional system on and dozed to death.

Kidnappers take turns to rape female pastor in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a gang of kidnappers who abducted a female pastor for ransom and took turn to rape her. The gang was said to have been busted after the pastor escaped naked from the kidnappers’ den. She was said to have screamed as she ran out of the den until residents in the area came out from their respective apartments to know what was going on.

ASUU- FG Withdraws Ultimatum For Striking Lecturers

THE Federal Government , Tuesday, said it was withdrawing the ultimatum given to striking university lecturers to resume or be sacked following appeals from well-meaning Nigerians and substantial compliance with the directive by some members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. According to the Federal Government, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN has confirmed that a sum of two hundred billion Naira agreed with ASUU at a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan on the 5th of November ,2013 has been fully paid into a Revitalization of Universities Infrastructure Account.

We’re waiting for sack letters, say defiant lecturers

Striking lecturers in the nation’s public universities on Monday made good their decision not to return to work as directed by the Federal Government. The striking teachers also refused to sign the attendance registers in their respective institutions as ordered by the government. They said they were only waiting for the sack letters the Federal Government threatened to give them if they did not return to work. In many of the universities visited by our correspondents, only administrative offices opened for business while the lecture rooms were empty. Particularly, lecturers’ offices remained shut. Among some of the universities visited by our correspondents were the University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, University of Calabar, Nnamdi Azikwe University, Awka, and the University of Uyo.

Nigeria-born Briton who killed British soldier says he loves al-Qaeda

 A man accused of murdering a British soldier in broad daylight on a London street told a court on Monday that he was a soldier at war and loved the Islamic militant group, al Qaeda. Michael Adebolajo, 28, is accused with co-defendant Michael Adebowale, 22, of running over Afghan war veteran, Lee Rigby, in Woolwich, southeast London on May 22 before attacking his unconscious body with knives and a meat cleaver. Adebolajo sat in the dock of London’s Central Criminal Court, the Old Bailey, just metres away from Rigby’s family as he gave evidence for the first time. He told the court that he was engaged in a war against Western nations fighting in Muslim countries.

 Former Portsmouth, Reading and West Brom Defender Sam Sodje has been filmed admitting he had accepted money in order to get himself sent off according to the Daily Mail. The 34 year old younger brother of Efe Sodje the former Super Eagles defender was recorded by an undercover reporter claiming he could arrange for players to pick up deliberate yellow cards for a fee of around £30k and that he had himself received £70k for picking up a bizarre red card for punching Oldham Athletic’s Jose Baxer whilst he was playing for Pompey.

FG not sincere, strike continues –ASUU

PUBLIC university lecturers on Sunday insisted  that they would not return to the classrooms  on Monday (today). They also accused the Federal Government of insincerity in its bid to resolve its dispute with the Academic Staff Union of Universities. The President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Fagge, confirmed this on Sunday via a Short Message Service  to an enquiry by The PUNCH. The Federal Government had through the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie,  deferred its earlier ultimatum to the lecturers to resume work on Monday (today) or risk being sacked. The shift  was to enable them to participate in the burial of Prof. Festus Iyayi, a former president of ASUU on Saturday.

Dogs are usually considered man’s best friend. But, as WHNS Fox Carolina 21 reports, sometimes they can go bad and turn to a life of crime. A Dollar General store in Clinton, South Carolina was dismayed when they discovered that they had been robbed. Manager Anastasia Polson told WHNS that they noticed that pig ears, beef bones, and dog food and treats were missing. The store has security cameras, so Polson went to see who had done the deed. Turns out, it wasn’t a person, “Well, we had a shoplifting dog.”

ANAMBRA STATE PDP CHAIRMAN KIDNAPPED

The Chairman of PDP in Anambra State, Prince Kenneth Emeakayi, was kidnapped today Monday Dec. 2nd by unknown gunmen who abducted him up as he was returning to Awka, the State capital. Prince Emeakayi was said to be returning from his village in Okija when his car was intercepted at a junction in Nri and was taken away by the gunmen. He hasn't been heard from since and the kidnappers are yet to contact his family.

Kids as prison inmates: Should children be made to pay for their parents’ crimes?

"Don’t Send Students Back To Campuses" - ASUU Begs Parents

48 hours to the deadline given by the Federal Government to striking university lecturers to resume classes or be sacked, the union has remained adamant, advising parents not to risk the lives of their children by sending them to the campuses. The Presidency, on its part accused ASUU leaders of treachery and warned the university lecturers not to dare the resolve of government to carry out its threat to sack them if they failed to resume.
