Hoodlums Clash: Police arrests Ajah Chief, Olumegbon. We were not involved: NURTW

There was tension late on Monday  afternoon in Ajah area of Lagos State  as scores of hoodlums were arrested by a team of anti-riot policemen.
The police in the state had, earlier on Sunday, arrested a man in the area, who was said to be the financier and the backbone of the warring factions,  Olumegbon Boys, Alhaji Fatai Olumegbon.
The policemen had, on Monday afternoon,  brought Olumegbon to his Ajah home for a search, when they invaded the hideouts, around the house.
A resident of the area, who identified himself as Femi, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, stated that the police invasion created confusion among the hoodlums.
“They brought Olumegbon to his house and saw many hoodlums around the place and they started to arrest them,” Femi stated.
The attempt by the policemen to arrest the hoodlums almost resulted in a clash between the two factions, as the Olumegbon Boys scampered in different directions.
The policemen, in an attempt to scare the boys from running away, reportedly shot into the air, creating pandemonium in the area.
State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ngozi Braide, could not confirm the number of arrest as of press time, but promised to get back to the Nigerian Tribune as soon as she found out from the area commander in charge of the area.
In a reaction to the development, the Lagos State chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Chief Tajudeen Agbede, has stated that his union was not connected with the mayhem that erupted in Ajah area at the weekend.
The NURTW boss explained that the problem in Ajah was as a result of land matter and it had nothing to do with road transport workers, as all the motor parks in Ajah were operating in line with laid down regulations.
He explained that those involved were undergoing interrogation by the police and no union leader had been arrested in connection with the clash.
“We are not involved in the mayhem that occurred at Ajah. The problem there was purely a land matter involving the indigenes. The people connected are already with the police and none of our members has been arrested with the matter. We are law-abiding and we have no reason to engage in fighting,” he stated.
