Fayemi Weeps as Olayinka's Corpse arrives Ekiti.
Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi wept yesterday as he
received the remains of his deputy, Mrs. Funmilayo Adunni Olayinka at the
Governor’s Office in Ado Ekiti. The late Olayinka passed on in a Lagos hospital
on April 6, after a protracted battle with cancer. Her remains were flown from
Lagos yesterday after a commendation service at the Anglican Church of
Ascension, Opebi, on a chartered flight to Akure Airport at 3.27pm accompanied
by the wife of the governor, Mrs. Bisi Fayemi, the deceased’s husband, Mr.
Lanre Olayinka and her children, Ololade, Olamide and Yeside. The Secretary to
the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Ganiyu Owolabi and the Chief Judge of the
state, Justice Ayo Daramola led other government functionaries to receive the
corpse at the airport. Fayemi said, “we thank God for the arrival of our
princess who sacrificed herself for the service of the people. On behalf of the
good people of Ekiti State, we cannot thank her enough. She lived a short and
eventful life. We thank God for giving her to us. We also thank God for taking
her to the world where there would be no more worries.” Fayemi continued: “She
fought a good battle. Our people’s deputy governor, our people’s princess, we
thank you. We pray God to grant her husband, her children, the entire Famuwagun
family and her larger political family the fortitude to bear the irreparable
loss.”As at 2:00p.m commercial and business activities were grounded to a halt
in Ado Ekiti yesterday as thousands of residents of the state lined the major
streets to welcome the remains of the late deputy governor. Politicians,
families and friends of the deceased, and all classes of Ekiti people stormed
the place, with some of them in tears. The body lay in a casket draped in
national colours and conveyed in a Mercedes Benz hearse belonging to
Lagos-based funeral undertakers, MIC. As at 6.15pm, various groups gathered at
Fajuyi ground where candlelight procession took off from, while some women’s
group also had vigil at her official residence. May her soul rest in perfect
peace.
