Achebe to be buried May 23rd.
The remains of the late literary icon, Prof. Chinua Achebe,
would be laid to rest on May 23, the Chairman of the South-east
Governors' Forum and Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, has said.Obi
made the disclosure at Government House in Enugu at the weekend, after a
meeting of the South-east governors with the family of the late Achebe. The
governor who failed to disclose the detailed outcome of the meeting, however,
stated that they deliberated on security, burial of Achebe and the Enugu
International Airport.Also speaking with journalists, the first son of the late
writer, Ikechukwu Achebe, described his father as a good man who wished
Nigeria well. He recalled that his father’s last wishes was a Nigeria that
would be free from corruption as well as a Nigeria that would live up to the
expectations of its citizens. The late Achebe’s first son thanked President
Goodluck Jonathan for granting him an opportunity to meet with him and his
support so far to the family. He also expressed gratitude to the South-east
governors for their support and special indication that his late father’s
burial was an important event. Governors Obi (Anambra), Martin Elechi
(Ebonyi), Theodore Orji (Abia) and Sullivan Chime (Enugu) attended the
meeting while Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha was represented by his
deputy, Eze Madumere.
