Obasanjo, Buhari, Tambuwal others shun Jonathan's event

Image
KEY predecessors of President Goodluck Jonathan in office, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo; and ex-dictators, retired Generals Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Babangida,  and Abdusalami Abubakar (retd.), as well as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, on Wednesday shunned the Democracy Day event of the Federal Government. While all former heads of government were reportedly invited to the event where Jonathan rendered an account of his mid-term performance, only Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.) and Chief Ernest Shonekan attended. Gowon ruled as military head of state between 1966 and 1976; Shagari from 1979 to 1983; while Shonekan spent barely 99 days in office as head of the Interim National Government foisted on the country by Babangida after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election won by the late businessman, MKO Abiola. Rather than be in Abuja, Obasanjo chose to attend the First Jigawa State Investment Forum in Dutse, where he showered prais

Mother of baby trapped in sewer pipe was present during rescue

Image
BEIJING — Authorities have concluded that a newborn rescued from a sewer pipe in eastern China became trapped because of an accident. They say there will be no criminal charges against the mother – who did not initially come forward to claim the baby. They also say the baby has been released from a hospital into the care of the mother and a man claiming to be his father. An official at eastern China's Pujiang county's propaganda office said Thursday that police concluded the unwed woman did not initially step forward out of fright. The official did not give his name, as is common among Chinese bureaucrats. The unnamed woman secretly delivered the child Saturday in a rental building's restroom. She later claimed the infant accidentally slipped into the squat toilet. Culled from Huffington post

Free Mercedes Benz G55 AMG given to UAE man for being too handsome

Image
Traditionally, the key to a man's heart has been through his stomach, or so the old wives' tale goes. But the key to a brand-spanking new Mercedes Benz G55 AMG could also unlock a man's heart  and this belief has been exercised by a Saudi Arabian woman who gifted a copy of AMG's finest ute-metal in hopes of capturing an Arabian male model's attention. It turns out that this was a gift granted in pity  Omar Borkan Gala, the new owner of the G55 AMG, was gifted the SUV after being deported by Saudi Arabian religious police for being "too handsome." The Dubai native was visiting a festival in Riyadh, the Saudi Arabian capital, when he was approached by authorities and asked forced to leave because the religious police "feared women could fall for him on the grounds that he is too handsome." In a political quagmire, an alternative would be forcing him to wear a burka, which would not be in step with his modeling career. According to InTouch Gos

Bayern Munich "Most valuable football brand"

Image
Bayern Munich has overtaken Manchester United to become the world's most valuable football brand, a branding agency has said. Bayern's brand is now worth $860m (£570m), according to Brand Finance, pushing United into second place. Bayern's status as European champions has given them access to a wider global audience, the agency said. But it added that Germany's Bundesliga was still second to the Premier League in brand value terms. Premier League club brands have a combined value of $3.1bn, the research suggested, well ahead of the $1.9bn combined value of Bundesliga teams. Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona were third and fourth in the rankings, followed by the Premier League's Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. Milan is the highest placed Italian club, at number 10. David Haigh, the chief executive of Brand Finance, said that despite the emergence of Bayern, there remained a deep divide between the way the Premier League and Bundesliga

A dependable security source hinted that the senior officer who is in the operations unit at the Borno Command of the Nigeria Customs was allegedly working discreetly with the insurgent group by “providing unfettered access for the sect to move arms into the country.” Another source, a civil servant who did not want his name in print maintained in an interaction with some journalists in Maiduguri that the Custom officer was actually arrested. “A security personnel also told me that the senior officer manned the border post each time the truck conveying arms was about coming into Maiduguri. He would simply tell his boys to let it pass that it has been cleared from above,” he said. “These trucks usually come with goods from Chad or Niger and arms are carefully hidden there but he woul

Governor Obi, others escape plane crash

Image
What could have turned to be an air mishap yesterday was avoided by the experience of the Arik pilot of Flight W 3788 conveying over 100 passengers from Lagos to Asaba in Delta State. Daily Sun gathered that the flight which was supposed to take off at 8:30 am, was delayed in Lagos on account of bad weather. Though travellers had boarded the flight, after about two hours inside the plane, they were asked to go back to the departure lounge as the aircraft could not take off due to what the pilot called “terribly bad weather at Asaba.”  After about three hours, the flight was boarded again because weather reports showed improvement within the internationally-accepted landing standards. By the time it was boarded again, many people who sensed the situation as warning from Providence, had already cancelled their trips. On getting to Asaba, the weather became bad again. Several attempts at landing proved difficult. Not wanting to take chances, the pilot promptly returned to Lagos. On re

Hoodlums Clash: Police arrests Ajah Chief, Olumegbon. We were not involved: NURTW

There was tension late on Monday  afternoon in Ajah area of Lagos State  as scores of hoodlums were arrested by a team of anti-riot policemen. The police in the state had, earlier on Sunday, arrested a man in the area, who was said to be the financier and the backbone of the warring factions,  Olumegbon Boys, Alhaji Fatai Olumegbon. The policemen had, on Monday afternoon,  brought Olumegbon to his Ajah home for a search, when they invaded the hideouts, around the house. A resident of the area, who identified himself as Femi, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, stated that the police invasion created confusion among the hoodlums. “They brought Olumegbon to his house and saw many hoodlums around the place and they started to arrest them,” Femi stated. The attempt by the policemen to arrest the hoodlums almost resulted in a clash between the two factions, as the Olumegbon Boys scampered in different directions. The policemen, in an attempt to scare the boys from running awa

Lagos BRT Buses now gasping for breath

Image
According to a report by Lanre Odukoya of Thisday newspaper the BRT buses are no longer what they used to be.Kicking off as one of the most structured and seamless road transport systems in this part of the world, it was easy for several thousands of commuters to hop into crisp and near-luxury BRT buses in Lagos, knowing well that they had no gridlock to worry about. But conditions not stringent in the traditional sense of the word were introduced; board with your tickets only, no hawking on board, no standing or loitering on the aisle, no preaching or campaigning and no smoking. And the punishment is just as mild as the few don’ts earlier listed; adhere to the simple boarding rules or get ejected, especially in cases where coercion is inevitable. In operation were the red and blue buses, operated by different companies – LAGBUS and the Lagos NURTW First BRT Co-operative Society. The state of the buses and their dedicated BRT lanes have suddenly become appalling to say the least. Th

My life in danger, Amaechi cries out

Image
THE political whirlwind blowing the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, became more ferocious on Monday with the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party suspending him from the party. The PDP said Amaechi would remain suspended until an 11-man panel set up to probe his “sins” submited its report. Chief Joe Gadzama (SAN), an Adamawa State indigene like the National Chairman of the party, Bamangar Tukur, chairs the investigative panel. Coming in the wake of the controversial outcome of Friday’s election of Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Amaechi said he was being victimised by federal powers and that he feared for the safety of his life. He asked the people of his state to pray for him not to fall into the hands of “desperate people at the federal level.” ‘I fear for my life’ “The way these people at the federal level are desperate, they may come after my life; so when you pray, remember to pray for me to remain alive. Now, you see political witch-hunt. It i

China rescuers save baby lodged in sewage pipe

Image
Firefighters in China have rescued a newborn baby boy lodged inside a sewage pipe leading off a toilet. Residents of an apartment building in Jinhua city, Zhejiang province, called rescuers on Saturday after they heard the infant's cries. Rescuers tried to pull the baby out of the pipe but failed and ended up sawing through a section of the pipe instead. They took the pipe to the hospital, where it was carefully pulled apart to release the infant. The baby, thought to be just a few days old, was found inside a pipe 10cm (4 inches) in diameter, says China Daily newspaper. Footage from state television showed firefighters and doctors working together using pliers to cut the pipe apart to get to the baby. The baby is now in a stable condition and officials are looking for his parents, reports say. The case generated condemnation on weibo, China's version of Twitter. "The parents who did this have hearts even filthier than that sewage pipe," one user was quoted

Woman gives birth on side walk

Image
A South Florida mom gave birth clutching a wheelchair on a sidewalk early Friday morning outside a Boca Raton hospital  and Miami-based birth photographer Emily Robinson captured the incredible moment in unforgettable images. "It was the first time I ever saw a mother be wheeled into the hospital holding her new baby," Robinson wrote on her blog. "It was the fastest, most incredible, beautiful, wild birth I've ever had the pleasure to document." Robinson's client Amy Beth Cavaretta, who along with her husband, Joe, is a photojournalist for the South Florida Sun Sentinel, had told Robinson she experienced a fast birth with her first daughter and handled pain well. So Robinson figured it would be a good chance to follow a family from home to the hospital instead of meeting them inside. "I did not know that I was going to have a baby on the sidewalk," Cavaretta laughed. "When we pulled up to the hospital, there wasn't any sort of panic

Mrs Martin was the sister of Jolie's mother Marcheline Bertrand, who died of breast cancer in 2007 at the age of 56. Her husband, Ron Martin, said the sisters had both had the same mutated BRCA1 gene, which Jolie inherited. "Angelina has been in touch throughout the week and her brother Jamie has been with us, giving his support day by day," he told E! News. "They both loved Debbie very much and although Angie is not able to come right now she has sent her love and support which was very nice." Mr Martin also praised the actress for electing to have a double mastectomy, telling the Associated Press: "Had we known, we certainly would have done exactly what Angelina did." On 14 May, th

French soldier stabbed in the neck in Paris, Police searching for man of North African origin.

Image
French anti-terrorist investigators are handling the case of a soldier stabbed while on duty near Paris on Saturday evening, prosecutors have confirmed. The soldier was wounded while on patrol in La Defense, a business district west of the French capital. Private First Class Cedric Cordier was approached from behind and stabbed in the neck with a small-bladed knife. Defence Minister Jean Yves Le Drian told reporters that he had been targeted because of his profession. His attacker, said to be a bearded man of North African origin, escaped and a police hunt is under way. President Francois Hollande said there was no sign so far of a direct link with the killing of a soldier in London on Wednesday, for which two suspected Islamists were arrested. France was rocked in March of last year by a string of killings by Islamist militant Mohamed Merah in the Toulouse area. He shot dead both French soldiers and Jewish schoolchildren before being killed in a police siege.

Turkey kissing protest held in Subway as couples defy ban on public display of affection

Image
ANKARA, Turkey -- Dozens of couples have locked lips at a subway stop in Turkey's capital, Ankara, to protest subway authorities' admonishment of a couple that kissed in public. Turkish media say that, earlier in the week, Ankara subway officials made an announcement asking passengers "to act in accordance with moral rules" after security cameras spotted the couple kissing. The issue prompted an opposition lawmaker to question the Islamist-rooted ruling party, which many secularists fear wants to expand the role of Islam in Turkey, about whether subway officials were authorized to make such demands. Some 100 people in the station kissed for several minutes in protest Saturday. Demonstrators carried signs reading "Free Kisses" and chanted slogans. A pro-Islamist group of some 20 people staged a counter-protest. Police set up barricades between the groups.

Meet the Dog who is unable to walk so gets around by pram

Image
SADIE the two-year-old Shar Pei dog is causing quite a stir when she’s out and about in Llandudno. The young pet can no longer walk and now gets around thanks to a new carrier pushed along by her owners. Sadie is owned by Rhian McFadden from Llanrhos, and the dog would be totally housebound if it wasn’t for the sheer determination of her owners who have so far spent over  £3,000 trying to help their disabled pet. Rhian said: “We first noticed Sadie had some mobility problems when she was a puppy, but by the time she was a one-year-old it was clear she had some major difficulties. “Eventually we saw a veterinary orthopaedic specialist from Liverpool University’s Small Animal Hospital. “Unfortunately our pet insurance wouldn’t pay for the treatment, claiming there were signs of this condition when she was examined as a very young puppy.” Since then Sadie has undergone two operations, numerous  x-rays and a variety of medications, all of which the family has had to fund itself.

Boko Haram kills three in fresh Maidugri attack

Witnesses said the gunmen came to the trader’s shop identified as Mallam Bitrus Koji, located at Chescon area of Pompomari, Maiduguri in a Volkswagen Golf car on Thursady afternoon and requested for cold water from the shop attendant, an almajiri boy. When he went in, one of the sons of Mallam Bitrus came out and the gunmen asked about his father. When the boy told them his father was not around, they pushed him into the shop where they met Mallam Bitrus. They opened fire on him, then they turned to his boy and the almajiri killing the three in the shop,” residents said. UK Zoo worker dies after being mauled by Tiger

Image
Investigators are trying to determine what led to the fatal mauling of a zoo worker by a tiger in northwest England, police said Saturday. Sarah McClay, 24, died after being attacked Friday by a Sumatran tiger while working in the big cat enclosure building at the South Lakes Wild Animal Park in Dalton in Furness, the Cumbria Constabulary said. The enclosure has various indoor and outdoor compartments connected by lockable doors, police said. Keepers enter various parts of the enclosure to perform duties. "However, systems are in place (to) ensure that animals and keepers remain apart at all times," the constabulary said in a statement posted on its website. "At some stage this has failed and the animal and Sarah came together with tragic consequences. The police are working to establish whether this was a result of human or technical factors." Zoo owner David S. Gill asked for the public's support, understanding and prayers in the aftermath. "The

Redemption for Bayern Munich in Champions League

Image
The woe is over for Bayern Munich in Champions League finals after it defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in a pulsating all German contest in London on Saturday. The woe is over, too, for Arjen Robben, who scored the winner in the 89th minute and set up Mario Mandzukic's opener in the 60th. Ilkay Gundogan's penalty in the 68th had pulled Dortmund level prior to Robben's nifty decider. Robben was labeled a villain by Bayern fans last year, when he missed a penalty and other opportunities in the final against Chelsea. "I do not know how many times I dreamed about it but I said to many people that tonight was going to be our night," Robben told Sky Sports. No wonder he was celebrating wildly at the final whistle. Indeed the euphoria among Bayern players at Wembley was fully understandable, since this was a team that had lost three of its four previous finals, two in agonizing fashion. Culled from Sky Sports

British-Nigerians killed British Soldier

Image
The world spoke yesterday against Wednesday’s killing of a British soldier in Southeast London by two men identified as British with Nigerian descent. British Prime Minister David Cameron described the incident as a terror attack. One of the suspects said they killed the soldier, Lee Righy, of the Second Battalion, the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in Woolwich, London because the British military has been killing Muslims. Cameron, President Goodluck Jonathan, United States President Barack Obama and other world leaders condemned the action. The Muslim leadership in Britain also decried the killing of the soldier in front of a barrack. The suspects were accused of hacking the soldier to death on a London street in revenge for wars in Muslim countries. They were known to security services, a source close to the investigation said yesterday. One man was filmed justifying the killing as he stood by the body, holding a knife and meat cleaver in bloodied hands. He was named by acquain

Image
A 23-year-old pregnant woman caused a stir at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters on Thursday after she confessed that she had sold her unborn baby for N200,000, in advance. The suspect, Adaeze Mba, who was arrested for conniving with her husband to sell their neighbour’s four-year-old son for N400, 000, said it was poverty that pushed them to crime. She confessed that she and her husband, Chibueze, had sold two other children for N700, 000. She said, “In March 2013, my neighbour’s son, Stanley Ezeaka, was following me about in the compound at Jakande Estate and it was at that time that my husband received a phone call from his partner that she needed a child for sale. My husband then suggested that we took Stanley even though he was a bit old. “We travelled to Imo State the following morning and sold him for N400, 000 after  which we relocated to Calabar.” When asked why she took to crime and how she would feel if someone bought her own children, she said, “I am seven

Unidentified protester repeatedly interrupts Obama's speech

Image
President Barack Obama was repeatedly interrupted by a heckler whose taunts slowed the delivery of a major national security speech in the Washington, D.C. area. The unidentified heckler began shouting at the president toward the tail end of his highly-anticipated address, when he touched upon U.S. policy toward detainees suspected of terrorist acts. Obama was forced to pause three separate times and talk over the protester, interrupting the flow of the closing section of the speech at National Defense University. “I'm about to address it ma'am, but you've got to let me speak,” Obama scolded the woman. “Why don't you sit down and let me tell you exactly what I'd do." The antiwar group Code Pink, which often interrupts high-profile political events with vocal protests against U.S. foreign policy and national security strategy, said its founder Medea Benjamin was the person responsible for the interruption. Revealed: Boko Haram not using suicide bombers

Image
Contrary to widespread belief that most of the bombings by the Boko Haram sect are carried out by suicide bombers, it has been revealed that the sect, whose members are being routed out of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States does not employ such a tactic. A source close to the leadership of the sect, which has acquired notoriety for its mindless killings of innocent Nigerians, employs deceptive tactics in bombing targets with its members sent on such assignments used as guinea pigs. About 4,000 people have been killed and thousands of others injured in the terrorist attacks carried out by the Islamic militants in the North. However, reprieve is underway for some of the victims as the Yobe State Government yesterday approved N187.4 million for their rehabilitation. “Nigerians have been fooled for a long time into thinking that the sect carries out spectacular suicide bombings. That thinking is very far from the reality on ground and has been encouraged by reports in the media and as w

Soldiers arrested for aiding Boko Haram

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, on Wednesday said some soldiers and officers of the Nigerian Army had been arrested for conspiring with insurgents in the ongoing face-off between the military and militants. The COAS however did not give the number of soldiers that were arrested. Ihejirika said that the affected troops were caught while posting comments he described as “negative” and conversing with terror suspects on the Internet. He stated, “There are some soldiers that have been found to be posting negative comments on the Internet and some  conversing with insurgents. “I want to state that any officer or soldier caught linked one way or the other will be disciplined severely, there are no two ways about it. “So the Directorate of Military Intelligence is encouraged to continue to monitor the activities along with military police and other commanders in the field because military service is service of patriotism as I said earlier.” Culled from The Pun

London attack: Britain probes possible Nigerian link

Image
Britain is investigating a possible Nigerian link to attackers suspected of hacking a soldier to death in London while shouting Islamic slogans, two sources with knowledge of the investigation told Reuters on condition of anonymity. Two suspects have been taken into custody after the attack, which the British government said appeared to be an act of terrorism. Police have not identified the suspects. The sources, speaking independently, said a Nigerian link was being investigated but gave no further details about the nature of the link. Police spokesmen declined to comment. A British soldier was hacked to death by two men shouting Islamic slogans in a south London street on Wednesday, in what the government said appeared to be a terrorist attack. A dramatic clip filmed by an onlooker just minutes after the killing showed a man with hands covered in blood, brandishing a bloodied meat cleaver and a knife. “We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you. This particular area has a combination of mountains, rocks and bushes that extend to Cameroon,” he said. Our correspondents learnt that the sect members mingled with civilians when th
