Wrestle-mania in the Rivers State house of Assembly.
I have
always been an ardent lover of the wrestling sport right from my childhood but
the appalling state of the game back here in Nigeria has further strengthened my
unpatriotism towards this sport in our local domain. But whenever this sport is
enacted in our various legislative houses, it arouses a high level of delectation
when you see old men and women audaciously wrestling against each other without
compunction. Two days ago this event played itself out in the Rivers state
house of Assembly where a faction of five chose to defy the ancient law of Mathematics
by stating that they represented a two-third majority out of a house of 27 members. Section 92(2C) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal republic of Nigeria, clearly states that “The Speaker or deputy speaker of the house of Assembly shall vacate his office if he is removed from
office by a resolution of the house of assembly, by the vote of not less than
two-thirds majority of the members of the house". If after the Nigerian governors’ forum
elections a faction would consider 16 votes higher than 19 then this bunch of
legislators have simply followed suit in
defying a simple principle of arithmetic.
I
watched with utter dismay how one of the legislators repeatedly hit the other
helpless legislator with the mace without even giving him a chance to tap out,
these legislators turned vagabonds invited their cohorts into the complex resorted
to destruction and vandalism of equipment. I have been instigated to make this
paroxysmic address because the danger this barbaric, uncultured attitude
portends for we Nigerians. With just a click of a button this video can be
watched on youtube and other social networks from every part of the world and
this does not speak well of us. We are one of the most religious nations in the
world but we do not practice what we preach, most of these legislators are
knights, deacons, and holders of spiritual titles in their various places of
worship but still live double standard lives.
Sanity
must be instilled in our society again, if fighting in the legislative chamber
attracts outright expulsion from the Assembly I think these oblivious actions
would be curtailed to a large extent. We elected these men and women to
legislate on our behalf not to wrestle with tax payers’ money. As 2015 draws
nearer we have to exhibit keen concern to
the caliber of people we elect into this
arm of government (Legislature), our
attention should not only be fixated at the Presidential and gubernatorial elections
.
This
dastard display of barbarism has to be looked into incisively by the House of Representatives,
which is now overseeing the affairs of the Rivers State assembly, the band of
rogue-legislators who were involved in the scuffle have to be severely punished
so as to serve as a deterrent to others.
This
is a plea to all elected officers of government to conduct themselves in an
orderly, cultured manner because they are human beings elected by human beings
and not irrational animals elected by human beings.
May
God continually bless Nigeria.
True talk.... Sanity really needs to be instilled in our society again. This is a pure public show of shame and violence. May God help us all.
ReplyDeleteThe most appropriate sanction is to ban such elected officers from politics for life. They are not worthy to be called honourable members at all.
ReplyDeleteI concur with you Sir. We must fight injustice even in our legislature.the fighters must be removed from office. OMG, how would foreigner see this-"a backward developing country. God help us.
