Senior Lecturer in the Creative Arts department of UNILAG resigns over allegations of sexual harassment.

On the 25th of June 2013, the Creative Arts students of the University of Lagos protested over alleged sexual harassment of female students in the department by their lecturers. The students stormed the Arts block in the morning with placards to register their grievance and later moved their protest to the Social Science department. Female students of the department claimed their lecturers were making life difficult for them by demanding sexual favours before they can pass their courses.

Ex-Immigration boss cautions parents on children’s oversea trips.

Former Comptroller- General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Mrs. Rose Chinyere Uzoma, has urged parents to stop sending their children, especially the girl-child on “fruitless”  overseas trips. Uzoma claimed that most of the hapless girls end up in jail abroad. Speaking at Nkwerre Country Club in Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State, venue of the Annual August Women meeting, the former Immigration boss, said: “Parents may not be aware of the grave dangers faced by most of their wards who want to travel abroad at all cost in search of greener pasture.”

Lagos seals off 13 buildings over pollution

Thirteen buildings were on Thursday sealed off by the Lagos State government for discharging sewage into drainage channels. The buildings, situated on Nnamdi Azikiwe Street on Lagos Island, were sealed off by officials of the State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Other Special Offences. Leader of the enforcement team, Kayode Bello, Director, said the enforcement became necessary following incessant complaint from residents.

French language to feature in 2014 UTME –Minister of Education

Federal Government on Thursday said intending candidates in the 2014 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) can put in for French Language, as it will feature in the forth-coming examination. Minister of Education, Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, stated this in Abuja, while giving in a farewell message to the out-going French Language Project Manager in Nigeria, Jean-Phillipe Roy. She said partnership between the France Government and Nigeria has brought about a review in the subject, hence its application, which is to take effect in the UTME from 2014. According to her, being multilingual in the 21st century is essential as it helps one to operate more effectively in a world society. PDP NWC Suspends Andy Ubah, Four others.

Nigeria’s ruling party the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) have suspended Senator Andy Ubah and four other members of the factional PDP Anambra chapter following their refusal to honour the party leadership’s order for the five members to appear before the National Working Committee (NWC) at its national headquarters in the FCT. The decision followed the meeting of the NWC after they reviewed the events of the Anambra state primaries, where a parallel primary was held by the Oguebego-led faction of the party.

The Nigeria labour Congress has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike saying it will mobilize Nigerian workers to fight against the removal of the minimum wage clause from the exclusive list of the proposed amendment to the 1999 constitution by the leadership of the National Assembly. The President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar stated this, while addressing newsmen in Abuja, after the National Executive Committee meeting of the Congress, said the placement of minimum wage on the concurrent list by the National Assembly will further impoverish Nigerian workers. Taraba crisis deepens, as Suntai dissolves cabinet

Ailing Governor Dambaba Suntai of Taraba State, who is still trying to iron out differences with the state House of Assembly, on Wednesday dissolved the State Executive Council in spite of the lawmakers’ rebuff of his request to resume his executive duties after staying 10 months away from the state. Suntai returned to Nigeria last Sunday still looking weak and unable to speak audibly even though he received medical attention both in Germany and the United States of America. He had first been flown to Germany before being transferred to the U.S. following the injuries he sustained in a plane crash on October 25, 2012.

A police corporal, a driver and two suspected assassins were yesterday shot dead following an exchange of gunfire between the police and gunmen at Festac Area of Lagos. The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of the Young Shall Grow Motors, Mr. Vincent Obianodo narrowly escaped death as he was shot in the hand during the encounter. The hoodlums were said to have attempted killing the transporter, but were repelled by his police escort.

The birthday celebration of a male student of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Adelana Niyi, turned sour as his girl friend, Yetunde poured hot water for jilting her at the party. Community Mirror investigation revealed that Yetunde, who exchanged hot words with the celebrant for inviting other ladies and ignoring her, reportedly went berserk and poured boiling water on Adelana. Sources said before the incident, Adelana tried to pacify his girlfriend but to no avail, even as Yetunde rejected all entreaties, and went ahead to pour hot water on Niyi, causing him severe burns on the chest, neck and right hand.

A 36-year-old fake journalist identified as Paul Yempe, who claimed to be the U.S-based Cable News Network (CNN) Correspondent in the Niger Delta region, has been arrested by security operatives in Bayelsa State. it was  gathered that the fake reporter was arrested last weekend in the office of the state Commissioner for Energy, Francis Ikio, in Yenagoa. A fake CNN identity card and another one bearing the name of Rivers State Broadcasting Corporation, popularly called ‘Radio Rivers’, were found on him.

ASUU Strike: University Students Urge FG To Implement 2009 Agreement.

Students in Edo state have protested against the attitude of the federal government in the current strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The students who carried placards marched round some streets in Benin City chanting solidarity songs to express their displeasure. Spokesperson for the group, Festus Otono called on the federal government and Minister of Education to fully implement the demands of ASUU, while explaining that students may start indulging in various crimes due to idleness, as he appealed to the parties involved to adhere to the 2009 agreement. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) embarked on strike two months ago to compel the Federal Government to implement the agreement reached with the union in 2009.

22-year-old man arrested for attempting to rape 80-year-old blind woman.

Officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps have arrested 22-year-old, Mohammed Inuwa, of Herwagana quarters, Gombe, Gombe State for attempting to rape 80-year-old blind woman, Malama Hannutu Baba. The Gombe State Commander of the NSCDC, Joel Khestossen, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Gombe on Tuesday that the suspect was arrested on August 23rd . Khestossen said the suspect was charged to Kasuwan Shanu Magistrates’ Court and later remanded in prison custody on the orders of the magistrate. According to him, the suspect gained entry into the blind woman’s house under the pretext of looking for one Kabiru Sani, a student of the Federal College of Education (Technical) Gombe. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on August 23, 2013 arrested one Tope Ajayi over his alleged involvement in digital satellite broadcast scam. Ajayi was picked up by operatives of EFCC from his apartment located at 26, Link Bawo Road in Hausawa area of Kano, following intelligence report. Over 100 decoders and other computer gadgets were recovered from his server room by operatives of the Commission during a search in his apartment.

Lagos cancels Lekki-Epe Expressway concession.

Controversy surrounding the management of the Lekki-Epe Expressway took a new turn on Tuesday as the Lagos State Government announced the termination of its concession agreement with the Lekki Concession Company. Already, the state House of Assembly has approved a supplementary budget of N7.5bn to enable the government to fund the acquisition of the existing concession right of the expressway. The LCC was mandated under a 30-year Build, Operate and Transfer agreement to upgrade, expand and maintain the about 50-kilometre road (Phase I), and construct another 20km of coastal road (Phase II) along the Lekki corridor.

The President said this at the inauguration of the Federal Government sponsored-Transformation Projects at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO). N31m WAEC fee stolen in Ogun, govt panel alleges.

A panel of enquiry set up by the  Ogun State Government to probe the alleged mismanagement of  N200  million paid by the government for West African Examinations Council, WAEC, fees, has submitted its report indicting some government officials of stealing N31 million. The panel, while presenting its report, yesterday, said that  some  officials of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, reportedly added  a total of 3,571 external candidates to the legitimate list of students that sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, in the last three years in Ogun State. The  administrative panel of enquiry was set  up by the Head of Service to look into alleged case of illicit and fraudulent diversion of government funds with a view to unravelling the fraud and  recommend appropriate sanctions to prevent  future occurrences. The mother of the 13-year-old stowaway, Ricky Daniel Ohikhena, who on Friday hid in the tyre compartment of an Arik plane on a flight from Benin to Lagos, was on Monday quizzed for hours by a combined team of security operatives from the Department of State Security Service and aviation security. The mother, Evelyn, who confirmed that she was interrogated  by the SSS operatives, said her son was a nice boy who never displayed any tendency for such a dangerous venture.

Catholic priest killed by own gun in Edo.

A Catholic priest, Reverend Father Peter Ayala, was on Sunday morning found dead inside his apartment at the St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church, Sobe, in the Owan West Local Council area of Edo State. He was suspected of having mistakenly killed himself with his own gun. Ayala who was due to celebrate the mass at 7.00 a.m. was said to be cleaning his pistol inside the apartment within the church premises when the gun reportedly went off and killed him.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday said the threat to implement a ‘No-work-No- Pay’ policy by the Federal Government would not stop the ongoing strike embarked upon by university teachers throughout the country. The union in a press release titled; “ASUU on government threat of No- Work, No-Pay,” signed by the University of Ibadan branch Chairman, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye and made available to journalists in Ibadan, described such as an ‘obsolete familiar threat.’

Imo lawmakers vacate Assembly over roof leakage

Members of the Imo State House of Assembly will resume legislative duties tomorrow at the Ojukwu Centre in Owerri over the leakage of the Assembly’s roof. The lawmakers recently vacated the Assembly complex following the leakage of the roof. They were, however, criticised by the opposition for abandoning their legislative duties. THE teenage stowaway, Daniel Ihekina, who was arrested at the Lagos Airport after flying in the tyre hole of an Arik plane from Benin to Lagos on Saturday morning, thought he was on a US-bound flight. A source at the Benin Airport who disclosed this said the boy’s parents had already departed for Lagos in search of the stowaway. The airport source, who did not want his name in print said, “From what we heard, the boy said he was being maltreated and tried to escape from his parents.

A teenager beat airline and airport security at the Benin Airport and sneaked into the tyre compartment of a Lagos-bound Arik plane, where he flew safely to the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, on Saturday morning. There was, however, pandemonium at the airside of the Lagos airport when passengers disembarking from the aircraft saw the teenager as he emerged from the undercarriage (aircraft tyre hole) to join fellow travellers.

ASUU strike: Return to class, FG urges varsity lecturers

The Federal Government on Friday appealed to striking university lecturers to return to work, saying a resolution to the 54-day strike was under way. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, made the appeal in Abuja during a meeting between government’s representatives and Chairmen of Governing Councils of both federal and state universities.

Telephone Scam: SSS Urges Public to be Careful of Fraudsters

Mobile telephone users in the country who are in the habit of not paying attention to issues of their mobile telephone,  have been advised to report to their service providers if they are unable to make or receive calls within a reasonable time. The Assistant Director, Operations of the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Department of State Service, Ibrahim Halilu gave the advice in Abuja while parading a suspected fraudster, Ibrahim Takat who was arrested in connection with the cloning of the mobile phone number of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory , Senator Bala Mohammed. The suspect who is accused of using the cloned number to obtain three million naira from the minister's account however says a friend of his who is at large deposited the said amount in his account out of which he was given four hundred thousand naira only.  According to The Punch, the House of Representatives  has said  it welcomes the request for a public hearing  on the controversial jumbo pay of  its members and senators  by a former Minister of Education, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili. Ezekwesili had  stated on Monday   that the National Assembly consumed over N1.1tr.  since 2005. Nokia plans to unveil new, large-screen mobile handsets next month to revamp its Lumia smartphone lineup and challenge rival Samsung's dominance in increasingly popular phablet devices, sources said. Nokia has developed more than one new mobile device and is due to announce them at an event in New York in late September, said the sources familiar with the plan.

The neck-less baby with its head almost totally sunk into the upper part of the body and with extraordinarily large eyeballs literally popping out of the eye-sockets, was born to Nir Bahadur Karki and Suntali Karki at the Gaurishnkar Hospital in Charikot.

US teenagers kill Australian Baseball player because they were bored

Two American teenagers shot an Australian college baseball player in the back and killed him “for the fun of it” and to break up the boredom of their summer vacation, according to police. Christopher Lane, 22, who was on a sports scholarship at Oklahoma’s East Central University, was randomly targeted as he was out jogging down a tree-lined street in the small rural town of Duncan, where he was visiting his girlfriend. Prosecutors charged James Edwards, 15, and Chancey Luna, 16, with first degree murder and they will be tried as adults. Luna is accused of pulling the trigger. A third teenager, Michael Dewayne Jones, 17, was charged with using a vehicle in the discharge of a weapon, and acting as an accessory. See their pictures after the cut

N100 bribe: Policewoman caught in video arrested

The Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday said it had arrested a policewoman caught in a video footage demanding a bribe of N100 from a commercial bus driver. Public Relations Officer of the command, Ngozi Braide, told our correspondent on the telephone that the arrest followed a probe of the video which has been circulating on the social media.
