Family Demands Justice As Police Officer Shoots Son To Death In Kaduna

The family of a 30 year old man killed by an alleged trigger happy  policeman, in Barnawa  area of Kaduna metropolis  last Sunday, has  called on the Inspector General of Police to bring  the killer of their son  Murtala, to justice. They are also asking the police to release their son's corpse for burial. Mr. and Mrs. Mohammed Aminu the parents of Murtala couldn’t hold back their anger and grief over the  killing of their first son, by a Policeman attached to the Kakuri police station.
Their grievance is that an officer of the law in the country employed to secure the lives of Nigerian citizens was responsible for sending their son Murtala, who celebrated his 30th birthday in early September to his early grave on September 28th for no reason. According to his parents, the late Murtala, a first class economics graduate from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, was operating a shawarma joint in Barnawa area in the state capital, using the little profit he made from the business to look after them. Murtala met with his untimely death in the hands of an alleged trigger happy policeman when he attended a friend's birthday party at Keffi Road in Barnawa along with some of his close friends. On their way, Murtala and his friends met Corporal Alex Okpe beating his girlfriend on the road and in the cause of Murtala appealing to the policeman who was in mufti to stop brutalizing his girlfriend, the corporal brought out a service pistol and shot him twice on the chest, leading to Murtala's death minutes later. Ever since his killing, the corpse of Murtala who is the breadwinner of the family as his father went blind some years ago has not been seen by the parents or family members as the police refused them the right to see it days after the killing, rather they are demanding that the family pay a sum of one hundred thousand naira to conduct autopsy on Murtala’s corpse. In reaction, the commissioner of Police in charge of Kaduna state command, Mr Olufemi Adenaike confirmed the incident saying the alleged killer, Corporal, Alex Okpe, had confessed firing but insisted that he did not aim to kill Murtala, and denied the allegation that the police requested some money from Murtala’s family for his autopsy. According to the commissioner, the alleged killer claimed that Murtala and his friends attempted to attack him which prompted him to shoot in self-defence, and that Corporal Okpe has since been arrested and confirmation of his arrest sent to the police headquarters, stating that investigation had since started. Solicitor to the Aminu family, Ehizogie Imadojemu, while briefing newsmen at the family residence, said every legal means will be pursued to ensure that justice is gotten, even if it involves dragging the alleged killer and the Nigeria Police Force to court over the killing of Aminu.
